Air band antennas are antennas that use the frequency of 108-136 Mhz AM band. These antennas can be used to listen to the spectrum of 105 to 136 mhz is aircraft. Most people can hear the communication in that band. You can hear checkouts and departures and all that is done in AM mode. One of the reasons they use AM because it propagates better and can be heard easily because the signal is very strong offering less interference. You can hear the planes from over a 100 miles away but you won't be able to hear the tower or the airport communication if you don;t live closer to the airport.
Listening to the aviation band is very interesting because it has not just the HF band but it also has the civil frequency. You can google your local frequencies online. So if you live in New York, you can just google New York air band frequency. They can differ in different states or even if you are in a different country. Most of the two way radio transceivers that use the air band frequency will use solid rubber duck antennas. For bigger radios such as HF radios they use steel or copper, aluminium or even stainless steel. The best antennas are the ones constructed out of copper.
You can monitor aviation frequencies while listening to music at the same time. You can listen to your air scanner and when a signal is detected it interrupts the music and plays the aviation transmission. You can auto scan all the channels and have the scanner detect all the signals. There is a variety of portable handhelds for airport shows, FBO's and anywhere around the airport.
